About Michelle Merrill
The dog/human relationship has interested me for as long as I can remember. At age 13 I was confidently telling my friends one day I’d be ‘a dog psychiatrist!’
We’d always had rescue dogs and when I was 17 we got a rescue Staffie X, called Lady, who refused to respond to any of my Dad’s ‘training’. At the time I was learning about Behaviourism in my Psychology A level and thought I’d try out some of this ‘positive reinforcement’ stuff I’d been learning about. I trained Lady to recall and was the only one who could reliably get her to come back!
From there I went to University and completed a degree in Animal Behaviour and since then I’ve been working, learning and building my skills as a behaviourist and trainer. I’ve volunteered at rescue shelters, helped rescue dogs and previously worked for a wonderful and knowledgeable company called Pawfect Dogsense based in Birmingham. I’ve worked with dogs of all shapes, sizes and breed drives, addressing reactivity on lead, separation anxiety, aggression in the home as well as basic and puppy training. My current personal challenge is working with our 3yr old greyhound and keeping her focused and interested in training – not a breed known for doing obedience work but we’re getting there!
I’m a science-based trainer – that means using what we know about dogs and how they think to bridge the human/dog communication gap for a Good Dog Life! I’m currently undergoing the course and accreditation from the School of Canine Science, so you know you’re getting the best, smartest and up-to-date training and behaviour help! I don’t use aversives, fear or ‘dominance theory’ – there are easier, nicer, more enjoyable ways to train your dog!
