I’m looking at buying a puppy, how do I avoid a puppy farmed dog?

First off, well done for wanting to puppy shop ethically! Any large puppy selling organisation is, by definition, a puppy farm and it’s unlikely that the dogs and puppies involved are treated with their welfare in mind. Look for smaller breeders. KC registered breeders is a good signpost, but there are ethical breeders out there who aren’t KC registered. YOU MUST SEE THE MUM WITH THE PUPS. Licensed dog breeders are required to show puppies interacting with their mothers in their place of birth

Ideally, the breeder has been breeding for a while. Ask how often the bitch is mated – an ethical breeder won’t breed from the same bitch every year. You want to see the puppies and mum living in the house, even if it’s in a puppy room and not roaming the house. The house should be clean and safe and the Mum relaxed and happy in her environment.
